This is not meant to be all “gloom and doom”. Public Gymnasium has not worked out for quite a few of our members including children with a German parent who grew up speaking German, children who attended German school in the US and children coming from Gifted & Talented programs in the US. Choosing the best school for your child and your circumstances is extremely important in determining your family’s experience. Even if your child is in a Gifted & Talented program in the US or almost certainly headed for American University, Gymnasium may not be the right fit for your child. However, for those of us who are here temporarily and looking for a linguistic and cultural experience, Gymnasium is not always the best choice. In an American view of the German system, that means Gymnasium, which is the track for kids with University aspirations. American culture, in general, tends to push for “the best”, “the highest”, “the most”. The type of parents that the idea of putting their child in German school tends to attract are typically type-A, Achievers. This post is written for those of you with children 3rd grade or above who are considering German school. Not everyone has University aspirations and the German system prepares students to be successful, productive members of society no matter what their goals. The most important difference is that students are tracked after 4th grade according to academic ability and career goals. Understanding these differences can help you make a good decision about whether you want to put your child in the German School System and if so, which school. The German School System is organized differently than the American School System.
